CNN) -- Critics took to the social networking site Facebook to voice their fury over Pope Benedict's remark that condoms do not prevent HIV.

Thousands have pledged to send the pontiff millions of condoms to protest the controversial comment he made to journalists as he flew to Cameroon last week.
"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."
Pope Benedict XVI has made it clear he intends to uphold the traditional Catholic teaching on artificial contraception. The Vatican has long opposed the use of condoms and other forms of birth control and encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.
About a dozen Facebook groups have sprang up, mostly from European countries, criticizing the pontiff.

Russia to build 6 nuclear subs with cruise missiles

MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russia will build at least six nuclear-powered submarines with long-range cruise missiles for its navy, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry told the Itar-Tass news agency.

The missiles can potentially carry low-capacity tactical warheads, the news agency reported Friday.

"These supersonic, highly maneuvering missiles are designed for strikes on aircraft carriers of the enemy if the latter poses a direct threat to Russia's security," the unnamed source told Itar-Tass. "The missiles can be launched at the most important coastal facilities."

The source added, "Despite the construction of a new nuclear submarine with new missiles, Russia intends to observe firmly international arms control agreements on equal terms with other countries."

The Severodvinsk-class submarines are being built at the Sevmash shipyard, the center of Russian nuclear submarine production, according to Global Security's Web site.

The new subs will be put into service for the Russian navy in 2011, the source told Itar-Tass.

Pakistani authorities released photos of two suspects Wednesday as they continued to hunt for the gunmen responsible for an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team which left seven people dead.

Six police officers and a driver died in the attack. Investigators cannot yet say who was responsible but security camera footage was released showing the attackers fleeing.
The video apparently shows small groups of attackers -- up to three per group -- jogging up a street apparently carrying weapons and using motorbikes to escape.

Sri Lanka's cricketers returned home to Colombo early Wednesday.

Sri Lankan vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara told CNN that Paranavitana and Samaraweera were due to undergo surgery later Wednesday. He said Samaraweera still had a bullet in his leg.
Describing the attack in an interview with CNN, Sangakkara said he had feared Paranavitana had been fatally shot.

But match referee Chris Broad spoke critically Wednesday of the conduct of the Pakistani security forces during the attack, claiming a van detailed to protect the convoy had vanished.
"I am angry at the Pakistani security forces," Broad told a press conference on his return to Manchester. "We were promised high level security and in our hour of need that security vanished and they left us to be sitting ducks."
Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has praised the police killed in the attack, saying the officers "rose to the occasion and laid down their lives to protect our Sri Lankan guests."

Sangakkara said sporting organizations would have to not rethink security worldwide for all sports.
"I think this will probably be, though hopefully not, the start of a very scary time for international sportsmen," he said. "If it starts in the subcontinent with cricket it's hard to imagine it stopping there."
International Cricket Council President David Morgan said Tuesday that the attack in Lahore had been shocking.

Sri Lanka -- a country enduring its own civil war with separatist rebels -- agreed in December to visit for a series of matches, after the Indian cricket team called off its tour following the deadly terror attacks in Mumbai in November. Indian authorities blamed those attacks on Pakistan-based militants.
Along with with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Pakistan had been due to stage matches in the Cricket World Cup in 2011 but cricket authorities have admitted the prospect of Pakistan playing any hosting role in that tournament now appears unlikely.

Government officials have instructed cable operators to remove GEO-TV from the airwaves or push it farther down in the channel order, Azhar Abbas said Saturday.
The channel signal has been blocked in certain areas, but other cable operators are still carrying it. The channel is functioning and broadcasting in some areas in Pakistan.
The reported media shutdown comes as thousands of demonstrators and lawyers were headed to Islamabad for a four-day "Long March" to demand that the government immediately restore judges the previous president had ousted.
Demonstrators also plan a massive sit-in at the parliament building Monday.
After sweeping into power in parliamentary elections last year, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) promised to reinstate the judges within 30 days of taking office. The deadline came and went.
GEO-TV, which is known to have an anti-establishment stance, has criticized the PPP-led government in recent weeks. The station has aired numerous reports on the recent lawyers' movement.
The restrictions on local media has also led to the resignation of Pakistan's Information Minister Sherry Rehman, a high-ranking source in the Ministry of Information told CNN on Saturday.
Rehman handed in her resignation to Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, the source said.
Repeated phone calls from CNN to the Pakistani government for comment were not returned.

But the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Tuesday finds that most Americans favor President Obama's overall economic proposals.
Sixty-five percent of those questioned in the poll said they support Obama's economic plan, with 34 percent opposed. But support for the $787 billion stimulus package, which aims to pump up the economy and create jobs by increasing federal spending and cutting taxes, now stands at 54 percent. That's a drop of 6 percentage points from last month.
Americans appear to be split on whether the stimulus will improve the economy significantly, and two-thirds of those polled said they're opposed to a second stimulus if the first one doesn't boost economic conditions.

"Spending government money is growing less and less popular as time goes on, but it comes as no surprise that Democrats and Republicans have different views on that matter," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director. "Democrats still favor the stimulus bill, and Republicans continue to oppose it. Independents are now evenly divided -- 48 percent favor it and 50 percent oppose."
The poll also indicates almost no support for another round of taxpayer money to help out banks in trouble. Roughly four in 10 would prefer to see the federal government completely take over some banks, and another four in 10 favor letting the banks fail if they are in dire straits.
"Support for all the spending programs is down for two reasons," said Bill Schneider, a CNN senior political analyst. "One, the total money the Obama administration wants to spend has grown to mind-boggling amounts. No. 2, every day people hear stories about how the government bailout money is being wasted or misused."
Holland added, "Obama gets his lowest marks on how he is handling the problems banks and other financial institutions are facing. Our poll was taken before the latest firestorm over AIG bonuses, but even before that became a major issue, a majority said they disapproved of how Obama has reacted to the financial crisis."
Some conservative governors are pushing back against accepting portions of the federal stimulus dollars headed to their states. Some of these governors said the stimulus may only make matters worse.
The poll indicates that Americans are split on the issue, with 47 percent saying those governors are acting appropriately and 52 percent feeling those governors are acting inappropriately.
